Dance Minor Requirements

Note: This academic minor in Dance may only be combined with (1) a teaching major in Kinesiology or (2) a major in Elementary Education. It is no longer possible to combine a Dance Education minor with a major in secondary education.

• 144 Rhythmic Training for Dancers, 2 cr
• 151 Movement as Material Through Improvisation, 2 cr
• 161 Somatic Theory and Practices, 2 cr
• 167 Introduction to Movement Analysis, 2 cr
• 241 Music Fundamentals for Dancers, 3 cr
• 255 Movement Composition for the Performing and Visual Arts, 2 cr
• 265 Dance History I: Dance Art from the Renaissance to the 1950's, 3 cr
• 351 Video Design for the Performing and Visual Arts, 3 cr, OR 170 Dance Production, 2 cr
• 371 Creative Dance for Children, 3 cr, or 372 Teaching of Dance to Adults, 3 cr
• World Dance, 2 credits from African, Asian, or Javanese dance; World Dance workshops listings under Dance 001 and 560. (Effective Fall, 2007, Ballroom and Jazz courses may not be applied toward this requirement.)

Dance Certificate Requirements

A Dance Certificate provides an adjunctive qualification and strength for students in other majors and fields who also have an interest in Dance. Note: This certificate does not prepare one for licensure to teach dance in elementary or secondary schools. Students are first eligible to apply for the Dance Certificate while enrolled in the second dance major technique course. Applications are available in the Dance program office, 139 Lathrop Hall. Courses are Dance listings in the Timetable unless otherwise indicated.

Certificate Requirements, 26 credits

• Modern Dance Technique, 9 credits from among 111, 112, 211, 212, 311, 312, 411, 412
• Ballet Technique, 2 credits from among 125, 225, 325, 425
• 144 Rhythmic Training for Dancers, 2 cr
• 151 Movement as Material Through Improvisation, 2 cr
• 161 Somatic Theory and Practices, 2 cr
• 167 Introduction to Movement Analysis, 2 cr
• 255 Movement Composition for the Performing and Visual Arts, 2 cr

Certificate in Introductory Studies in Dance/Movement Therapy

Certificate Requirements, 22 credits.

To quality for the Certificate in Introductory Studies in Dance/Movement Therapy, a student must take two semesters of Dance courses-Practice and apply for admission to the certificate program at the end of the second semster of the second dance/movement therapy courses (232).

• Dance Courses - Practice
  • Either 011 and 012 Modern Dance or 111 Modern Dance Technique I, 4 cr
  • Plus credits from two other dance forms such as Ballet, Jazz, Modern Dance Technique or World Dance forms with no more than two courses in one form, 2-3 cr
• 151 Movement as Material through Improvisation, 2 cr
• 161 Somatic Theory and Practice, 2 cr
• 167 Introduction to Movement Analysis, 2 cr
• 231 Introduction to Dance/Movement Therapy, 2 cr
• 232 Introduction to the Dynamics of Dance Therapy, 2 cr
• 331 Dynamics of Dance Therapy, 3 cr
• 439 Dance Therapy Practicum, 3 cr
